Place the cabinet assembly (the island base) right side up on the kitchen floor, and position the island precisely where you will install it. trace along the four corners of the island onto the floor with a pencil. remove the island. measure in from the traced lines, using the side and toe-kick thickness dimensions, and mark the floor.. Building a kitchen island can be pretty straightforward if you use stock cabinets for the cabinets and doors. use simple straight cuts on plywood and stock boards to wrap the cabinets. before you begin building the island, order your countertop made 21-1/4 inches wide by 56 inches long so that it’s ready to install when the base piece is done..

Here's what my dining room looked like before i started my reno. i was ripping this whole wall of cabinets out anyway for my reno but i'm all about re-use/re-cycle since i wanted a kitchen island and i was lucky enough to have an extra set of 2 double doored cabinets in my dining room originally. i decided to use both of the bottom cabinets to make my kitchen island.. The island is (3) 24″ wide ikea base cabinets. the cabinet is the middle has a 5″ drawer on the top and a 10″ drawer on the bottom, with a shelf just above the bottom drawer. the microwave is about 21″ wide x 12″ tall x 16″ deep, and it’s an lg from best buy..
