National wood flooring association l revised 04.2018 nwfa/nofma grading rules oak flooring nwfa-nofma clear: a flooring product of mostly heartwood with a minimum number of character marks and discoloration, providing a uniform appearance while allowing for all heartwood natural color variations.. Most hardwood lumber produced in this country is graded using the rules developed and maintained by the national hardwood lumber association (nhla). in 1897, hardwood lumber producers and users formed the nhla to standardize the grading of hardwood lumber. prior to that time, individual mills had their own grading systems for their local markets.. Hardwood flooring grades. grading of hardwood floors is more prevalent with unfinished flooring as it is with prefinished. reasons being you will find prefinished manufacturers prefer to stay within a defined area of flooring that is basically more uniform in appearance, unless otherwise specified. (character grades excluded)..
